Selim Zherka: Some Charitable Institutions in New York City to Support this Christmas
The season of giving is just around the corner, and with it should come a more astute consideration of the plight of the needy and the poor. If you’re in New York City and you’re thinking of helping the local community this holiday season, here are some of the notable charities in the five boroughs to give to.
Coalition for the Homeless
This non-profit was founded in 1981, driven by the “right to shelter” act which required both New York City and New York State to provide shelter for the homeless. The act paved the way for many legal victories that ensured people’s right to shelter. The coalition has direct-service programs, including the Grand Central Food Program which provides 1,000 meals to vulnerable New Yorkers every night for the past 31 years.
Brooklyn Movement Center
Located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the Brooklyn Movement Center or BMC seeks to engage with residents in the area, as well as those in Crown Heights. Founded in 2011, BMC is devoted to the social and economic concerns of Central Brooklyn residents, such as educational self-determination, environmental justice, food sovereignty, and police accountability.
New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE)
NICE has been the go-to non-profit for helping the city’s immigrants since 1999. It is based in Jackson Heights, and was initially into providing resources and support to the neighborhood’s immigrant community, particularly in regard to hate crimes. NICE became a formal nonprofit after 9/11, working directly with day laborers living in Jackson Heights and aiding immigrants negotiate for better wages and working conditions.
Real estate developer Selim Zherka has behind him a 30-year strong career in real estate development and investment.
